The Chapel & Congregation

Mariners Chapel was built in the docks to serve a multicultural mix of seamen and boatmen. Alongside meeting their spiritual needs the church provided basic education for their families and established the docks first coffee shop. Opened in 1849, the eye catching chapel was frequented by seamen from many nations. In its first 5 years, 2,000 copies of the Bible were distributed.
